Ground Source/Geothermal Heat Pumps |
|---|
|
Most people are aware of this type of heat pump and also have some knowledge that ground excavation is required! Geothermal means heat from the earth. Similar to an air source heat pump the heat is transferred from the pipes in the ground to a heat store and then used to run the heating system and provide hot water. A ground source heat pump is able to produce a more constant level of heat than an air source heat pump i.e more heat in the winter. If you think about it the temperature 2m down in the earth varies a lot less than the air temperature. Customers weighing up both options need to bear in mind the cost of excavations or very deep bore holing, it isn't always possible to bore a 100m deep hole in some areas depending on the ground structure. Ground source heat pumps are ideal for new builds or barn conversions with enough land, but customers are often put off by the cost and disruption to 'retro-fit' a ground source heat pump to an existing established property with a nice garden. This is why we believe air source heat pumps are a good alternative option. We have experience of installing systems with geothermal heat pumps.
